The First Six Months...

PictureThe beginning of our journey...
As Reggie turns 6 months I have been able to reflect on our initial journey of building our bond through socialisation. It has been interesting to watch him learn and accept his new environment. I have introduced the basic foundations of the training process and Reggie seems keen and responsive. Together we’ve had lots of fun days and I’ve really enjoyed seeing his delightful character unfold and begin to flourish. It’s made me realise that every pup is different in terms of their personality and character and this can have an impact on when to start the various stages of training.

PictureThree essential guidelines to the training process: Firm, Fair and Fun seems to be working for all the family...not just the dogs!
As mentioned in my May blog I have adapted a framework which revolves around routine and structure. I believe it’s great for building Reggie’s confidence and making him feel secure, especially in the early days. Short walks, rest and meal times have been regular and consistent. Graham Cox, author of The Gun’s Dog (2013), suggests there is no royal road to training a gun dog and encourages the reader to be creative in their approach to the process. He states the training process must be ‘Firm, Fair and Fun’. These three elements are at the forefront of my mind and I have tried to embed them into everything we do together.

Basic manners is important, especially if the dog is a big part of family life. Therefore I have introduced the foundations and Reggie is progressing well. My tone of voice has been essential when introducing the basic commands and I’ve been consistent with my words and conscious of my body language towards Reggie.

Things don’t always go perfectly...It took several attempts for Reg to understand the 'wait' command. By working together we succeeded and now have a calm and well behaved pup at meal times.

Living by the coast I was keen for Reggie to have an early introduction to water. Being aware that some dogs are a little hesitant about their first dip I wanted his experience to be positive and fun.

By using the ‘buddy’ system I encouraged Reggie to play in the water with Ivy and Jack.

Dogs learn a lot from other dogs and it didn’t take Reggie long to jump in and have  fun!

Reggie's first introduction to water at Heingsbury Head. A big splash and lots of fun!

One of the key lessons I am learning is that Reggie will grow and change through the course of the journey.
And as our bond strengthens it will provide a firm foundation for the changes ahead and the challenges we may have in the training process. If we grow together and bring out the best in each other then we have more chance of success.

More to come in my next puppy blog when Reggie celebrates his first birthday...
